What to do, what to do...

Here is my dilemma, one faced by pretty much every other parent, I think: what do you do when you have a new(ish) baby who is napping twice a day and a toddler who naps once a day?? Now that the baby is becoming somewhat regular, they tag team their naps and it isn't until 4 or even 5pm that they both are done napping. So, does the baby get robbed of his two naps in order to just roll with the toddler schedule, or do you honor the baby's need to sleep and you and the toddler are stuck in the small, second floor condo all the livelong day? The weather in Chicago is turning brutish so it's not great weather to go out in anyway, but it'd be nice to have the option. So, parents of two little ones, or parents of one who have a second coming (that's you Mike!), what do you do???

Well, for me there is what is, and what will be.

Right now, she takes a big long nap in the mid- to late-afternoon. So I indulge my almost obsessive need to leave the house sometime in the morning, then let her nap and try to hang out around the house b/w naptime and bedtime (though we often need to pick up Stacy in the evening).

Once we get the second kid... well, I have no earthly idea. I try not to think about it.

I used to try to get both to sleep in the afternoon at the same time and the baby would also have a shorter nap in the morning. So, the baby would nap around 10 am. Then both would nap from 2-4 pm.

When the baby had his morning nap, that's when I'd do storytime or coloring or puzzles or something with the toddler. Something quiet.

If I wanted to go out, I tried to do it in the morning and the baby would skip that nap. Then I'd try to get them both to nap after lunch.
